Que Sera Sera

Ron Marinas & Summer de Guia
Two Man Exhibition
24 May 2022

In this unpredictable and divided world, perhaps uncertainty is one of the few universal commonalities we all still share. That familiar, open question that keeps us all up at night: namely, what will the future bring?

In ‘Que Sera, Sera’, bright and rising art stars Summer de Guia and Ron Mariñas take us through the conflicting journey of tomorrow’s unknowns and promises. Through their potent figurative works, we see and experience fear and anxiety but also inspiraton, meditation and excitement.

In Mariñas’ signature gold-backed figurative works, guardian angels watch over troubled, sleeping charges and modern warriors stand, armored in the sharpest cut suits and outfits, ready to face any challenge. The writing is literally on the wall, as they call to mind medieval mottos and house words of assertion, self-assurance and above all, resolution against fear.

Meanwhile, de Guia’s emblematic women are songs of strength unto themselves as they rebel against both fear and the obligation to be anything other than as they are. In her harmonious private spaces, her ladies pour tea, stretch, meditate and recline, but always with palpable power. As though to say, come what may, they’ll be ready.

Ultimately, both artists’ works serve to champion those who rise up again and again. This exhibit is one of the strength needed to meet tomorrow face to face, and serves to remind us that while the eponymous song is right: while the future is not ours to see, it is, however, ours to write. In acknowledging that tomorrow simultaneously brings both the terror of the unknown and the potential hope of better days, de Guia and Mariñas have built a tribute to the human spirit of endurance and resilience.
