In combining realism with images, motifs, and other types of visual communication culled from different eras of pop culture, Balute fulfills the function of the cinematic montage which ultimately serves his intention of assembling deeper, more rounded portraits of his subjects—one which synthesizes what he considers both the “beautiful” and the “grotesque” aspects of each individual. In juxtaposing and blending diverse images, Balute aspires to present a fuller picture, to depict strength through the subjects’ acceptance of their individual personalities and its multiple facets.
