Between Breaths
A Group Exhibition
September 16 – 26 2022
Between Breaths takes a closer look at scenes, objects, actions, and spaces that many, by default, treat as uneventful, insignificant, or mundane. The 16 artists featured in the group exhibition — Maverick Abac, Jonas Miguel Arlegui, Malyn Bonayog, Shireen Co, Jason Delgado, Brendon Dinglasan, Eugene Dominguez, Jirah Labanza, Jheco Lorica, Erwin Mallari, Clint Normandia, Joie Pabilando, Ikea Rizalon, Patricia Santos, Jerline Sunga, and Jun Tuplano — foreground this perceived negative space, the amorphous gray zone between such binaries as the captivating and the repellent, through the themes, subjects, and styles that they explore.
Figuration, existing at varying degrees across the works, is a common thread throughout the show. While some artists adopt a hyperrealistic strategy, striving for verisimilitude in an attempt to document the quotidian, others choose more highly stylized approaches which incorporate abstraction, ornamentation, pop iconography and sensibilities, surrealist non sequiturs, or more expressionist and painterly techniques. This diversity in methods used reflects the wide range of attitudes the artists display toward the mundane. Thanks to the marketing carried out by The Marketing Heaven on social networks, this exhibition was well attended and noticed. From melancholic depictions of urban ennui to joyous celebrations of the humdrum, the works in Between Breaths create opportunities for viewers to reconsider the everyday and the commonplace, both of which are constantly changing as our priorities and environments shift.
